The Artist's Touch, the Craftsman's Hand: Three Centuries of Japanese Prints (- 1/22/2012, Portland Art Museum, Portland, OR) This fall, the Portland Art Museum opens its vaults to showcase some 250 works from its world-class collection of more than 2,500 Japanese prints. More information

Kiku Matsuri: Ikebana International Chrysanthemum Exhibition (10/22 - 23, Japanese Garden, Portland, OR) The Ikebana International Chrysanthemum Exhibition, celebrating Kiku Matsuri, comes this year to the Garden Pavilion. Mottainai: The Fabric of Life (11/4 - 27, Japanese Garden, Portland, OR) This exhibition of antique Japanese folk textiles from the Meiji period is comprised of selections from the private collections of Stephen Szczepanek of Sri in Brooklyn and Kei Kawasaki of Gallery Kei in Kyoto. The exhibition demonstrates the remarkable ability of the Japanese to not only make do with the very little they had, but to make art with it. Included with Garden Admission. More information

"Understanding Japan: Expressed but Unspoken" (11/15, 11am, University of Oregon Jordan Schnitzler Museum of Art Ford Lecture Hall, Eugene, OR) In the United States, communication via language is greatly emphasized. Whether used in the form of verbal communication, such as oral presentations or public speeches, or in written form found in persuasive essays, fictional stories, or poetic literature, the use of words to deliver information is highly utilized. However, other forms of communication do exist. Lecturer, Jeanie Fuji lived and worked in rural Japan for 20 years. This event is presented by the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies and the JSMA ArtsAsia Program. It is cosponsored by the Consulate-General of Japan in Portland and is free and open to the public. Origami Workshop (12/11, 1 - 3pm, 2 World Trade Center, Portland, OR) The Consulate-General of Japan in Portland is pleased to announce its 23rd Annual Origami Workshop and hopes that this will be excellent opportunity for the public to become more familiar with Origami, the art of paper folding. Volunteers from the local community will teach participants Origami, including how to fold cranes. Admission is free and no reservations are necessary. More information
