JET Program Departure Orientation and Reception
On July 29th, the Consulate-General of Japan in Portland held a departure orientation and reception for the newest members of the JET Program at the official residence of Consul General Okabe.
In total, 79 people attended the reception, which included the JET Program members, their family members, members of Japan-Oregon related organizations, local university and college professors and officials, and JETAA members.
Consul General Okabe spoke to the newest members of the JET Program at the reception. He gave the members encouragement to be a part of strengthening the bridge of friendship between Japan and the United States, more than ever, by stressing the importance of learning each others' cultural differences. He also showed his deepest gratitude for the new JETs, who decided on participating in the program although the situation in Japan is very difficult due to devastation from the Great East Japan Earthquake.
A representative of the JET Almuni Association Portland Chapter also said a few words of encouragement after Consul General Okabe. At the end of the reception, a representative of the new JETs was asked to say a few words by sharing their ambitions for their future in Japan. The new JETs socialized themselves with other participants including many JET Program Alumni.
Total of 35 new JETs departed for Japan the next day, Saturday, the 30th.
