On December 11th, 2015, the Consular Office of Japan in Portland hosted a reception to celebrate the birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Portland. Around 400 guests, including the Honorable Kate Brown, Governor of Oregon, the Honorable Charlie Hales, Mayor of Portland, and First Lady of Portland, Mrs. Nancy Hales and other Mayors, states and local government officials, the representatives of Japanese related organizations or Japanese Companies attended the ceremony and reception.
At the ceremony, the national anthems of both countries were played. After remarks by Consul General Hiroshi Furusawa, the Consul General’s Commendation was awarded to the state of Oregon and municipalities around the region for maintaining the sister-state and sister-city relationships with their partners in Japan. After that, Governor Kate Brown and Consul General Furusawa led the guests in a toast to His Majesty the Emperor and to the President of the United States.
At the reception, Japan-related organizations and Japanese companies located in Oregon hosted promotional tables in order to highlight the various cultural and business relationships that exist between Japan and this area. In addition, there was an exhibition of the Toyota “MIRAI” (a fuel cell vehicle (FCV) that runs on electricity made with hydrogen). This was the first time that this new technology has been showcased in the Northwest.
The reception served as a great opportunity to raise interest in and deepen understanding of Japanese companies, local cities, and Japanese culture while celebrating the birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan.
