Greetings from Consul General Uchiyama

Dear Friends, my name is Kojiro Uchiyama and on April 18th, 2016 I departed my previous position at the Embassy of Japan in Ireland to take up duties as the head of the Consular Office of Japan in Portland. I am happy to be here and I am greatly looking forward to meeting and working with the people of Oregon and Idaho.

Ireland is known as the “Emerald Isle” for its lush and verdant landscape but Portland is also a city blessed with vibrant green and a place where one can easily feel the power and immediacy of the natural environment. I am looking forward to spending the next few years here, surrounded by the beauty of nature.

Previously, I have had the opportunity to serve in 3 other posts in the United States: Boston, New Orleans and Houston. But, arriving here in Portland, I realized it has been nearly 23 years since I last held a position in America, at the Consulate General of Japan in Houston. I am very interested to see how this country has changed over the years.

Although our presence here in Portland is that of a small Consular Office, our jurisdiction covers the State of Oregon and southern Idaho and we will do everything in our power to provide service and support to the Japanese population in this area as well as doing our best to maintain and strengthen the ties between these two fine states and towns and regions throughout Japan. In this way we hope to do our small part to sustain and build upon the excellent relationship between Japan and the United States. I ask for your continued understanding and cooperation as I begin my time here in Portland and I look forward to our time together.
