The 27th Annual Japanese Speech Contest Held

The 27th Annual Japanese Speech Contest organized by the Consular Office of Japan for students who are studying Japanese in high schools, middle schools, and immersion programs in Oregon and South Washington was held on Saturday, April 18th, at the World Trade Center in Portland. The contest was successfully completed with the participation of 22 students from 10 schools. About 80 people were in the audience, including Japanese language teachers and the contestants' families.

There were three divisions. Division 1 is for middle school students. Division 2 is for high school students. Division 3 is for Immersion program students of middle and high school level or who are from homes where Japanese is spoken.
At the award ceremony the winners in each division were presented their awards and prizes by Consul General Hiroshi Furusawa.

The contest was supported by the Association of Teachers of Japanese in Oregon, Chef Naoko, Delta Air Lines, the Japanese Ancestral Society of Portland, Portland General Electric and Shokookai of Portland.
