Japanese and Americans participate in a Cleanup Event of Oregon Beach
Ongoing attention on tsunami debris washed out by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, some of which might be washed ashore on the west coast of North America, has helped raise public awareness of the much larger and continuing issue of general marine drifting debris both in Japan and the United States.
On September 22, SOLVE, a non-profit environmental protection organization in Oregon, sponsored a beach cleanup along the Oregon Coast. Japan related organizations such as Japan-America Society of Oregon and Shokookai (Japanese Business Association) of Portland called for volunteers, and more than a hundred Japanese, Japanese Americans, Japanese students at Portland State University, and American members of Japan related organizations participated in the beach cleanup.
A Japanese TV station, Fuji Television Network, also came to the beach to tape the event on that day for their donation raising campaign for beach cleanup.
