Reception in Commemoration of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Reconstruction of Disaster-affected Regions
On March 12th, 2012, the Consulate-General of Japan in Portland held a reception in commemoration of the Great East Japan Earthquake and reconstruction of disaster-affected regions at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Portland. Portland Mayor Adams and Salem Mayor Peterson were among the guests and close to 250 people attended the ceremony and reception.
Consul General Okabe expressed his sympathy to the victims who lost their lives and to the people who are still suffering from the unprecedented disaster. He asked the guests to join for a moment of silence. He continued to thank people who have extended warm support to Japan to help recover from the tragedy, and reported that Japan’s efforts toward recovery are steadily progressing.
After Mayor Adams said a few words, messages which were sent from Governor Kitzhaber, and Oregon U.S. Senators and Representatives were conveyed..
On the stage, two groups who visited the disaster-affected regions after the tsunami talked about their experience and activities as volunteers. Thomas Lauderdale and China Forbes members of a worldfamous music group “Pink Martini”, who did a charity concert to raise money right after the tsunami, read the famous poem by Kenji Miyazawa “Amenimo Makezu”. Mitch Iimori played Tsugaru-Shamisen.
Japanese companies and organizations that are helping with the recovery in Tohoku also joined the reception by having promotional booths at the venue. The reception and booths served to inform the guests of how recovery efforts have been carried out and how they are progressing.
