On Friday July 31st, 2015 the Consular office of Japan in Portland held a pre-departure orientation and reception for the new participants of the 29th JET Program.
The details of the event were as follows;
- 1. Date and Time : Friday July 31st, 2015 12:45-14:30
- 2. Location: 21st Floor Meeting room, Wells Fargo Center
- 3. Attendance: JET participants, their families and friends, Japan-America Society of Oregon(JASO), parties from local universities in Oregon, JET alumni (a.k.a. JETAA), Shokookai of Portland, etc. (Total attendance: 90)
- 4. Summary:
At the beginning of the reception, Consul General Mr. Furusawa greeted the participants and encouraged them to make the bridge of friendship between Japan and America more solid through JET program, referring to the importance of getting to know each other's culture.
After the Consul General spoke, Veronica Advesalo, a former officer of JETAA, mentioned that the program should be a great opportunity for them to build a network all over the world including Japan, and that she is expecting them to be successful during the program and even afterward as members of JETAA.
Along with these speeches, the Chair of JASO, Mr. Kurosaki gave a toast expressing his hopes that the participants communicate actively with other teachers and students and have fun during their time in Japan.
While spending some precious last moments with their families and friends, the new JET participants also enjoyed interacting with the attendees from the local community as well as JETAA members, and received useful information about life and work in Japan.
The next day, August 1st, 54 participants departed from Portland International Airport for Japan.
