The 31st Annual Japanese Speech Contest organized by the Consular Office of Japan was held on Saturday, April 20th at the KPMG LLP office in Portland. The contest was successfully completed with the participation of 24 students from 11 schools. This year’s speech topic was “Describing my favorite outfit”. There was an excited and nervous atmosphere as each contestant spoke in front of an audience of about 80 people, including Japanese language teachers and the contestants’ families. Everyone did a great job, with their speeches reflecting their personal experiences and social issues as well.

There were two divisions this year. Division I is for middle & high school students. Division II is for Immersion program students of middle and high school level or who are from homes where Japanese is spoken.

The contest was supported by the Association of Teachers of Japanese in Oregon, Chef Naoko, City of Sapporo, Delta Air Lines, the Japan-America Society of Oregon, the Japanese Ancestral Society of Portland, KPMG LLP, the Portland-Sapporo Sister City Association, Sapporo International Communication Plaza Foundation and Shokookai of Portland. Thank you very much.
