Oregon and Japan Agree to Mutually Simplify Driver's License Issuance Procedures
The State of Oregon and Japan have agreed to simplify the process of issuing driver's licenses to those who are licensed to drive on the other side under a Memorandum of Cooperation, which was signed by Amy Joyce, Driver and Motor Vehicle Administrator, Oregon Department of Transportation and Consul General Masaki Shiga in Salem on November 1, 2022. Consul General Shiga, who was present at the signing ceremony, expressed his hope that this MoC will ease the burden of the process for applicants for driver's licenses and will further enhance human exchange between Oregon and Japan for their mutual benefit.
Previously, applicants with a Japanese driver's license applying for an Oregon driver's license were required to take a knowledge test and demonstrate actual driving skills, but this agreement will exempt them from that requirement. Under the agreement, applicants with an Oregon driver's license who apply for a Japanese driver's license will be exempted from the knowledge and skill examinations as well.
