Adolf Hertrich, Former President, Japan-America Society of Oregon to Receive 2024 Autumn Commendation from the Government of Japan

On November 3, 2024 (Japan Standard Time), the Japanese government announced the recipients of the 2024 Autumn Commendation, among them was Adolf Hertrich of Sandy, Oregon.
Mr. Hertrich will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette this year in recognition of his contributions to the promotion of international exchanges and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.

Mr. Adolph Hertrich served on the board of directors of the Japan-America Society of Oregon for 27 years from 1986 to 2013. As its president from 1995 to 1997, he made great contributions to the promotion of friendly relations between the United States and Japan in various areas. In particular, Mr. Hertrich's efforts to build connections between Oregon and Toyama Prefecture resulted in the establishment of a friendship agreement between the two prefectures in 1991.
In addition, Mr. Hertrich recognized that the promotion of Japanese studies in the U.S. was essential to strengthening friendship between the U.S. and Japan, and he contributed significantly to the advancement of Japanese studies in the U.S. by establishing scholarships for Japanese studies at two universities in Oregon.
As Chairman of Vanport Manufacturing, Mr. Hertrich also focused on efforts to promote economic development and free trade between the U.S. and Japan. In the 1980's, as trade friction between the U.S. and Japan intensified and Congress began to impose sanctions on Japan, Mr. Hertrich lobbied members of Congress and spoke at seminars and public events to promote open and enhanced economic relations between the U.S. and Japan.
